Learning to Love the Body We’re in

Learning to love your body can be a journey that takes time, patience, and self-compassion. Here are some tips that can help:

  1. Focus on the things you like about your body. Instead of obsessing over your flaws, try to shift your attention to the things you appreciate about yourself. This can be anything from your eyes, to your smile, to the way you move.

  2. Practice neutral or positive self-talk. The way we talk to ourselves can have a big impact on our self-esteem. Try to be kind and encouraging when you talk to yourself, and avoid negative self-talk. Shifting from negative to neutral is a much more realistic way to adjust inward thoughts about self and work toward the potential goal of body positivity.

  3. Treat your body with kindness. This can include things like getting enough sleep, eating nourishing foods, and engaging in physical activity that you enjoy.

  4. Surround yourself with positivity. Try to spend time with people who uplift you and avoid those who bring you down. Follow social media accounts that promote body positivity and self-love.

  5. Challenge negative thoughts. When you have negative thoughts about your body, try to challenge them with neutral thoughts such as “how human of me.”

  6. Remember that your worth is not determined by your appearance. You are so much more than your body, and your worth is not determined by how you look.

  7. Seek support. If you're struggling to accept your body, consider talking to a therapist or joining a support group for people with similar struggles. Sometimes it can be helpful to have someone to talk to who understands what you're going through and who can better equip you toward achieving body neutrality or positivity.
