Learn More About Annie the Retired Service Dog & the Puppies Behind Bars Program

Learn more about the program that our in house retired service dog comes from.

The Puppies Behind Bars is a program based in New York that trains prison inmates to raise and train service dogs for military and first responders with service related disabilities. The program was founded in 1997 and has since trained hundreds of dogs. The dogs are trained over the course of two years and learn about 100 commands!

The program provides inmates with the opportunity to give back to their communities and develop important life skills such as responsibility, empathy, and teamwork. The inmates involved in the program care for the puppies 24 hours a day and receive training in dog training and behavior.

Once the puppies are fully trained, they are placed with individuals with disabilities where they provide valuable assistance and emotional support.

The Puppies Behind Bars program has been successful in helping inmates reintegrate into society and reduce recidivism. It has also provided individuals with disabilities with highly trained and well-behaved service dogs who offer life changing support.

The Puppies Behind Bars program is a unique and innovative approach to addressing both the needs of individuals with disabilities and the rehabilitation of prison inmates, and has had a positive impact on the lives of many people.
